Joseph Gable letter to John Creech [manuscript], 1954 January 1.

Gable, Stewartstown, Pa., writes concerning a plant in his nursery that may be R. quinquefolium. He continues in detail about his observations on the breeding of R. reticulatum, the best opportunities for pioneering in rhododendron breeding, a Rhodora hybrid produced by George Fraser, and the value of other hybrids. Of interest are his comments on the damage that would be done by a return to normal colder winters, including the "hardy" Gable azaleas. He concludes with reminiscences of bitter winters when the temperatures reached 20 below and the ice was two feet thick.
